Team Coaching
REFLECTION & ACTION

WHAT

In Team Coaching, the focus of the coaching process is the whole team as a system. It will be important to look at the context within which the team collaborates, and to have a joint understanding and clarity about the overall purpose and goals of the coaching process.

WHEN

For teams, coaching can be an effective approach in situations such as

  • reviewing and improving communication and collaboration in the team, e.g., when there are changes in the composition of the team, or when it has a (partly) virtual and / or international set-up,
  • taking over a new important project, working on the transformation of the team’s core tasks, and future set-up,
  • being part of a broader transformation process that includes integrating and collaborating with other teams or functions within the organization,
  • reflecting on the team’s change and innovation capabilities, energy management and resilience.

HOW

Depending on the aspirational goals, Team Coaching can be facilitated as a one-off activity, e.g. in the form of a facilitated workshop within the context of an offsite meeting. Or it can be set up as a process with multiple sessions, which follows the same aspects as 1-1 coaching. It starts with having clarity and a joint understanding on goals and interests of and in the team. Once the formal agreement is set, the regular team sessions will take place, focusing on conversations, reflections, and feedback.

WHAT IF

The effectiveness and outcome of a Team Coaching process highly depends on each team member’s and their leader’s readiness to open up, to be part of the conversation, and their preparedness to express their wishes and concerns. As your team coach, it is my responsibility to sense if there is any issue that needs to be addressed, and facilitate a conversation that respects the individual’s boundaries.
